Actually, I have not admitted to being the troll, at least by the definition
that was given. My only intention in this case was to make a casual comment.
When I read the post about the Christian fiction discussion there was a comment
in it that said that these are the kind of books one would not be embarrassed
to share with others. My immediate reaction was that I would. Even though I
have read a number of religious books I have never read any Christian fiction.
My impression is that they are a waste of time and everything I hear about
them reinforces that impression. However, I can imagine recommending one. I
suppose it is possible that one or more of them might have something in them
that
would cause me to recommend it. I think that is unlikely, but it is possible.
If I did make such a recommendation I would feel embarrassed. I would feel
compelled to apologize and assure the person to whom I recommended it that the
religious content had nothing to do with the recommendation. Because that was
my
immediate reaction I made a casual comment to that effect. Unfortunately,
there are people who are so intolerant that they just can't allow a casual
comment
to just be a casual comment and absolutely must make a big deal out of it.
Then comes the name calling. Troll is one of the nicer ones I have been called
in my life, but the definition provided with it rendered it a simple straw man.
Again, though, if someone is so outraged that another person has the temerity
to disagree with them then they can minimize their exposure to other points
of view just by not attacking the people who hold them.

Once again Roger, your points are probably valid, but as valid as they are,
they aren't about books, bookshare, reading, group activities, or any of the
various other topics discussed on the list.

Since you've admitted to being the troll in the title of this message, could
we consider your current activities self-canibalism? If so, let me know when
you are finished.

Bob

Your point is quite legitimate. It is interesting that those who object to
the pot being stirred are at the same time vigorously stirring the pot. It is
as simple as this. If I am looking at a message that I have a response to
then, like anyone else, I respond to it. In the process of making those
responses
I am bound to express my opinions. If you don't like those opinions -- and I
am using the universal you here -- then, really, honestly, think about it,
that really is just tough shit. The plain fact is that there are a lot of
people in this world whose opinions you are not going to like and if you open
your mind enough to accept that then I guarantee that you will be a lot
happier. Opening your mind may run counter to what you have been taught in
church,
but churches, despite what they might say, are in the business of controlling
you, not ensuring your personal happiness. I will also point out that even
though I have never been a believer myself I have known any number of
atheists who were former religionists and their stories are very similar. The
story
is always one of accumulating doubts and discomfort with their upbringing and
that is usually rather sad, but the part where they put their upbringing
behind them and finally break with religion is an entirely different matter.
They always describe it as the most liberating experience in their lives and
one of the most liberating parts is that they can finally disagree with
others without feeling a self destructive gnawing hatred inside. It still
remains,
though, that if you have not had that liberating experience and it upsets you
so much to hear an opinion that is different from your own you can minimize
exposure to those opinions by not denigrating them and thereby provoking the
person with the different opinion to respond to you.

I'mnew to thislist but it seems to me that if people don't react the pot in
effect hasn't been stired.  And, this really doesn't help any of us who need
help or want to discuss Bookshare right?
