I am not in the mood to check bibliographies right now, so let me ask. Does
my memory fail me or is that one of the works that S Gould drew on heavily in
formulating his theory of punctuated equilibrium? Whether it is or not, as a
Gould fan, I would be interested in reading it myself. It is definitely one I
have not read. Presumably that is the same Burgess of Burgess shale fame? Do
you
know when it was published?

The Living Cowries -- by C. M. Burgess
It is, in fact, a somewhat dated if excellent book on the subject. Yet,
passionate arguments on the problem of regional population variants versus
subspeciation
in the all too variable C. arabicula. -- while fascinating and valuable
amongst evolutionary biologists and malacologists -- would exceed the scope of
topical discussions on this board. Besides, discussion of certain details of
Cowrie anatomy may even be found offensive to the sensitivities of some non
initiates.

Roger, the only issue is that the entire topic is out of bound to the
subject of this list. In the same way, my opinions on matters that may be of
passionate
interest to me, such as the geographic distribution and speciation of Cyprea
arabicula, whether or not zapping a conductor with 1 million volts in a Tessla
device can be deemed Quantum Tunnelling, or the contestation of the age of
the cretacean Iridium boundary, are all irrelevant to this board. Whether
or not I can find friendly or opposing views to my extremely strong
opinions on such topics, I would still be out of order, unless I were to ask
bookshare-related
questions such as. . .
Are there bookshare books that can help me to research patterns of speciation
in isolated populations of C. arabicula?

Believe it or not, people who have different opinions than yours are not
necessarily angry and bitter. If you think you have gotten to know an imaginary
being you might have a hard time understanding that, but it is true. I think
you will also find it much more liberating to form your opinions by basing
them on objective reality rather than unfounded assumptions. That way you
will not presume to know anything about another person's experiences without
even knowing that person. Believe me, seeking and finding truth is an
extremely gratifying thing to do and has to beat just claiming something to be
the
truth without even trying to test it against reality.

Roger,
I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience with religion that you
have become angry and bitter. As for me, coming to know God was what freed me
from the confines of "Religion." You see, I believe there is a big
difference. Now, if you were not so angry, you would not have responded to the
notice
about the Christian book thing. I didn't respond to a notice about fantasy
books, even though I'm not particularly interested in them.
Your quick response tells me you're still hurting--and for that I am really
sorry.

Your point is quite legitimate. It is interesting that those who object to
the pot being stirred are at the same time vigorously stirring the pot. It is
as simple as this. If I am looking at a message that I have a response to
then, like anyone else, I respond to it. In the process of making those

I am bound to express my opinions. If you don't like those opinions -- and I
am using the universal you here -- then, really, honestly, think about it,
that really is just tough shit. The plain fact is that there are a lot of
people in this world whose opinions you are not going to like and if you open

happier. Opening your mind may run counter to what you have been taught in
church,

atheists who were former religionists and their stories are very similar. The
story
is always one of accumulating doubts and discomfort with their upbringing and
that is usually rather sad, but the part where they put their upbringing
behind them and finally break with religion is an entirely different matter.
They always describe it as the most liberating experience in their lives and
one of the most liberating parts is that they can finally disagree with
others without feeling a self destructive gnawing hatred inside. It still
remains,
though, that if you have not had that liberating experience and it upsets you
so much to hear an opinion that is different from your own you can minimize
exposure to those opinions by not denigrating them and thereby provoking the
person with the different opinion to respond to you.
