A lot of libraries print libraries, do not use the Dewy System any longer. Go to a college or University library and see what I mean. For example, at Kutztown, we have four different library numbering systems, depending on which department you are in. For Library Science, AKA the kiddy book section, there is the Dewy. For the AV center there is an author or producer classification, and they are behind a counter, so the user never sees the system in action. Upstairs, in the Main collection, they are classified by some kind of numbering system contingent on the author, and the topic covered in the book, for example, all the books about Amish life are together, while the others about blindness are in the same place. In the Leisure Reading section, which the Kutztown University library leases by the way like a car, they are shelved by author. And in the special collections that are scattered around the library they are shelved by specialty. All the Pennsylvania History is in one place. So I hate to say it, but Dewy is dying out even among regular libraries, as is the paper form card catalog. My library here in Corry has theirs, however, there aren't any cards in it, because the catalog is all on online. They do keep a hard copy system, but it is for the librarians or as a back up in case of well.... the possibilities are endless. Just my thoughts. A Keyword search would make life a lot easier, smile. But Jessie said once, that would require a five thousand dollar investment they don't have. Does anyone want to do some fund raising? Shelley L.
