Hi, Sue,

It is a very frustrating problem. Now that I've seen it once, I seem to be
seeing it with lots of things. I suppose I should just give up and download
the XML.

As to how you make a text file out of this, do the following:

Download the DAISY version of the book from Bookshare.

Unzip all the Daisy files into a folder. I don't know what all of them are
for, but I've found that if I don't unzip the whole thing, this won't work.

Now find the file that has the name of the book and an extension of XML.

Press enter on that file. This should open the XML file in Internet
Explorer, or whatever your default browser is.

You could read it right there, just like that. See, Internet Explorer knows
what to do with XML, so it translates all the background information, and
displays the book for you to read.

If you don't want to read the book in Internet Explorer, and I usually
don't, just press Control-A. This selects all the text in the file and
copies it to your clipboard.

Now go open an editor of some kind. Notepad will work fine, but you could
use Wordpad, or even Word. I prefer Notepad, because all I really want is a
straight text file.

Once your editor is open and you have a blank document in front of you,
press Control-V. This will copy all the text that you just grabbed from the
XML file and place it in Notepad.  Remember that this is just plain text;
it's not in grade 2 Braille or anything like that.

Save your file. Call it whatever you like, but something easy to remember.

Copy it to your chosen notetaker by whatever method you choose.

If you have a notetaker like the Pacmate, when you open this text file on
the notetaker, it will have already made the necessary conversions to grade
2 braille without you having to do anything else.

Hope this helps.

Nancy

Nancy, Will you describe what you mean when you say you copied it to a text
file? I have been trying to convert XML to text as a solution, but have
been unsuccessful.

I, too, have reported this, but it is not being fixed.

Thanks in advance,
Sue S.

I actually reported this on one book that I was reading. The BRF copy had
sentences that just trailed off abruptly. It seems to occur after ellipses.
I downloaded the XML copy, and it didn't have this problem.

My solution: I did a Select All on the XML file, and copied it to a text
file. I then put that in my Pacmate, and it seamlessly converted it to
grade 2 Braille.

I then went back to the book's download page and reported this as a quality
issue on the book. It sounds like it's happening with all of them, though.

Hi Kelby,

I have the same problem and I wish there was a solution.

When I download BRF files from the new site, sometimes the ends
of sentences get strangely cut off. Is there a reason/solution
for this?
