Good analysis here, Rusty. I did read somewhere that they would support the old book port as long as there were parts.

I didn't hear any commentary about how long they would support it,
just that they would. The deal with APH is that they don't do all the
fixes themselves.
When I had to get the USB plug fixed on mine they had to send it back
to Springer I'm guessing. It wasn't cheap either! I think they
replaced the board $125.00
I got the idea that, though there are changes, there are many things
about the bookport which will be the same. Lary mentioned that the
footprint is the same size, same keypad. Same speech chip. they're
choosing a special battery because, Lary said, it works best with
bookport. It seems like they may be using some of the same internal
architecture. I don't know that to be the case, but it seems like
they're sooping up the old BP with things which can be taken advantage
of in the future. As I understand it, they've run out of internal
memory for firmware on BP 1. That seems like something which they're
working on. It seems like SD is being used because CF is getting more
expensive.

So, it seems like they're taking a good thing and just making it
better, not redesigning it from the ground up.

I'm not so down. Am disapointed they won't have overdrive at first. Will
wait till they do; otherwise it's too much like what I already have.
  Consolation for Suzanne.
I'm staying openminded on the batteries. The speach isn't a big issue. I may still prefer external speakers, but it will be nice not to have to mess
with headphones when I want to check something quick.
I was a lot more impressed with the icon braille than I had expected.
Let's all wait till the real thing comes out and some of the bugs are
worked out before becoming supercritics.

Well, I listened to main minue last night on a c b radio and I was
singularly disappointed. We will still have that same old speech program
and, really not much more. Yes a stereo mike and the ability to change the
recording settings but, I herd nothing about a line in jack.
The charging set up will be different but I really don't see that as an improvement. With book port one you can get some rechargeable double ayes
and just change them when you need to. With the new one you half to by a
proprietary battery from the printing house or leave your computer on while the unit charges. Yes one can plug it in to an a c outlet but, if your in an
airport that is out of the question.
Did I get the wrong impression or is the new one upgradeable just
like the old one or what.
Think I will just limp along with my old one and wait for book port
three.
