Hi Evan and Lissi. I agree that it would be helpful to have some comments on
these issues from Pavi. Unfortunately, since Pavi doesn't spend much time
interacting with us, I'm not sure she can see the big picture and the
factors contributing to it. I think Carrie can because she reads the list,
understands our history, and sees the numbers of books involved directly.
Because Bookshare is growing so nicely, I would be very surprised if any
single factor is causing the lower levels of books available for
proofreading. By the same token, I'm sure there are some factors in play
that we on this list don't know about or understand fully.

Lissi, I don't think we'll get to the point where there are no books to work
on because any volunteer could choose to upload a new book at any time.
That's why I think it would help to balance things if we can put our heads
together to encourage those volunteers who are able to start submitting more
books. I really value our team of proofreaders, and I'm committed to working
with everyone to find a solution. If we brainstorm, I'll bet we can come up
with some ideas to get people excited and engaged again.

Hahaha! You are right, the issue is quality, not time taken. But I would
argue that there is a relationship between the two that is not necessarily
one to one, but significant nonetheless. It is not a book or two, but a
pattern involving a lot of books.

What you are describing with the book you checked out is an isolated
incident; and you certainly did more than the Jiffyproofing being talked
about here. What I and others here are talking about is a pattern of
checking out books and checking them back in again without any apparent
attempt to even look at the text. They couldn't have done so in the time
they had.

Now, if the quality of all those submits was truly stellar, then that would
be great, and no major correcting would have had to be done. But, unless
they were all children's books, which we know they were not, how would
anyone have been able to find out what the quality was in the kind of
timeframes we're talking about here?

Still, having said all that, the question occurs to me: Could even several
Jiffy proofreaders, taking several books each day, be responsible for the
drastic decline in the number of books on the Check Out page? I suppose it
is possible, but it seems unlikely that that is the entire cause. But as
Lissi says, we just don't know enough to do anything other than speculate at

this point.
