Smile, Sue, you have encountered what a lot of us call Junk Characters, it 
is the scanner thinking there should be something there when there isn't. 
This is the one big thing I have to do when editing my books is to get rid 
of these annoying buggers.  My scanner seems to like J, and I, L, and K, as 
well as strange symbols as junk characters.  Nuke it if it doesn't belong 
from context.
