You can get a number of junk characters, typically at the beginning or end of a line, they include- J I F \ | & ^ ~ ; , as well as some others I probably forgot.
The scanning software may try to recognize any imperfections in the print, or smudges at times. One way to cut down on this, but not a fool proof method, is to have de-speckle turned on when scanning the book.

E., this is not as tough as I thought. Kenneth did a good job of scanning.
One question I have is: Do you sometimes just see an extra letter? In one
spot the letter f appeared before Henry VII. Does this mean it is just an
extra letter? Nothing seems to be missing in the context at that point. I
have read a lot of historical novels that took place during this period of
English history and that makes it easier to read. It will take awhile but
not as long as I thought.
