Hi Sue,
When proofreading scanned books you will often see certain characters that
don't belong. It usually happens at the ends of the lines of the printed
book, but since those line breaks usually aren't kept they may be in the
middle of lines.
Some of the most common characters are l, i, 1, t, f, j, |, and ^. Once
you've validated a few books you'll get used to them and feel more
comfortable recognizing and eliminating these.
