I m surprised you can't get a 64-byte driver.
I own an Epson 44 Perfection that I bought when using XP. When I switched to
Windows 7, I simply plugged in the Epson scanner and a page came up with a
driver I could use. Someone helped me, so I can't be more specific.

Hmm, 2 votes for the Opticbook.
I saw a Xerox document scanner on Amazon for around $60, but have no idea if

it's any good.
I had no idea my good old Epson wouldn't work with my new machine, either. 
I'm quite annoyed.
