It is not as screenreader friendly, so, not really, unfortunately, what free word editing software which claims to be more usable than say word 2003, hmmm, stick with what you got, ok? This is just my humble opinion and two cents probably not worth much, but just in case it is worth at least something, I think you should try at your own risk of getting into deeper waters to swim virtually and metaphorically speaking. No longer Jazz Trumpeter Chris Botti since he contacted me, back to just plain Chela as always and have a great weekend all. Oh yeah, my birthday is coming up too, going to be 25 April 6th.

The first book I proofread I did with JAWS 9 using Wordpad and the page breaks read quite well. At that time I knew very little about how to manipulate anything there, but at a later time I accidentally deleted a page break and on the advice of someone on this list I was able to fix it by copying and pasting another page break into the right place. That way I learned that I could manipulate page breaks with the equipment I had. In some later proofs it turned out that JAWS 9 did not read the page breaks. At least it didn't in continuous read mode. I found out that I could make it read them by passing over the line with my arrow keys one line at a time. That was less satisfactory, but it still worked. Then JAWS 10 came along and later, JAWS 11. Neither of those would read page breaks in Wordpad at all. By then I was starting to do my editing in Open Book and was moving on to do more scanning than proofreading, but I kept JAWS 9 on my computer anyway for the instances that I would need to read page breaks in Wordpad. It came in very handy when I proofed The History of Dracula and Vampires. After proofing the whole entire book I converted it to RTF and saved the converted document in my documents on my computer and then uploaded it. Carrie bounced it back saying that there were about three or four times as many page breaks as there should be. I looked at it and, indeed, there were. I started trying various things to get rid of the extra page breaks without having to read the book over again removing each one as I came to it and I found out that Open Book 6 is somewhat limited about what it can do with page breaks too. For one thing, I can't use find and replace in my Open Book for page breaks. Finally I figured out that the added page breaks appeared either in the middle of words or at the end of them with no space between the word and the page break. So I used the find function to go through every lower case letter in the alphabet with a page break following it and replaced all of them with only the letter. I did this using JAWS 9 with Wordpad. Since that book, I have only scanned. I am now more prone to scan because that way I can work on a book that interests me rather than rely on what's on the checkout list. However, proofing is easier and I am thinking of going back to proofing for a while. This would mean either dealing with the mess Open Book tends to cause when converting files or proofing with JAWS in Wordpad which is less than satisfactory. So I have a question. Do you think Jarte would solve any problems for me? Do you think it would just make things worse for me?

Fascinating. Visually, wordpad does not show page breaks. They are there, you can insert them and usually accidentally because you don't know where they are delete them, but not see them. Jarte, shows them visually, but apparently does not indicate them in screen readers. In the old days I told people that it was easy to use computers because all you had to do is be smarter than a chip that can only process 8 bits at a time. Then I told people you had to be smarter than the programmer. These days, I find it hardest to use programs written by people that just aren't bright enough to figure out how to make their programs do what people expect them to do.

I was considering downloading Jarte too, but this kind of makes me think it is not worth the bother. The specific thing I need something like that for is the fact that my Open Book tends to insert extra page breaks when I convert from ARK to RTF. If one cannot manipulate page breaks with Jarte it does not solve the problem. Nevertheless, I have found a way to do it. It seems that the current version of JAWS will not read page breaks in Wordpad. JAWS 9 does, at least in a half hearted way. It does it well enough that I can close down JAWS 11 and open JAWS 9 and then use the find feature to find and get rid of those uninvited page breaks.

Hi Misha!

Thanks for telling us about your experiences with Jarte. There is a screen reader mode, but that doesn't help with the announcing of page breaks, and, like you, I have found that the software seems too bare bones.

I've recently been using Jarte to clean up scans. I cannot say anything about how it works with screen readers since I am sighted (sort of). So far, I would say it is not quite ready to be used as the sole proofreading software. The good and bad of Jarte is that it eliminates all special characters and extra formatting that Word, and at least my OCR program, put in.

My OCR program (Omnipage) puts in section breaks, rather than page breaks. Jarte eliminates the section breaks, so they cannot be converted to page breaks. Actually, Jarte doesn't handle any special characters such as page break, paragraph mark, or tab in find and replace. I couldn't replace quote space quote with quote paragraph mark quote for example. I couldn't even get it to reliably (it did work sometimes but not often) replace an em dash with double hyphens.

One of the good things about Jarte not recognizing special characters, it strips out optional hyphens, so I didn't have to try to do that. And Jarte definitely reduces the size of rtf files compared to Word. This stripping of extra formatting does not affect the features like bold, italics, underline, font name, font size, or centering that the bookshare tools recognize (and in the case of font size, use in making navigation tags).

Jarte is fairly easy to use, though many parts of the user interface are different from most Windows programs. For me, the icons used in the default interface are just too small to tell what they are supposed to represent. However, a simple change in options sets it to a more traditional (the option is called "classic"), interface. The menus are often several levels deep, but there are lots of keyboard shortcuts.

I will submit the book Earthworks by Brian Aldiss which I mostly cleaned up in Jarte, tomorrow (but as I mentioned above, some things had to be done in Word).

Hi Andromache!

The free version of Jarte didn't announce page breaks with Window-Eyes. I think this was one I tried when I was trying so many word processors. I had to install it again to be sore.

I just wanted to report that Jarte is accessible to screen readers, allows for page break insertion, and is free. :) It's basically a diluxe version of WordPad, without all the bloat of MS Word. Page breaks are also announced, at least by NVDA.

So I'm very happy. I found a solution that won't cost me anything. Just thought others might be interested. I should also mention that Jarte does all the essentials, like text formatting, attribute changing, insertion of tables, customized tab stops, etc. One feature that really stood out is Hot Connect, where you can have your browser open to fill out forms, edit text in Jarte, save changes, and have the text automatically copied to the other program's window.

In other news, my new scanner has just arrived. So I'm all set. Off to start proofing.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, you do need software that will recognize, preserve, and announce page breaks. From what I know, and I don't use NVDA but JAWS, the two pieces of software best able to do what you need to do when proofreading
are either Word, or Kurzweil 1000.

Sorry to tell you what may be inconvenient news.

But happy proofreading!

I've just been approved for volunteering for a second time. I used to be on this list a long time ago but had a different e-mail address. I remember
some of the names here.

But my question is about screen readers and pagination, and what software works best to edit books. I tried opening the book in both WordPad and OpenOffice, but I don't get any feedback on page breaks. If it helps, I'm using the NVDA screen reader. Do I need to purchase MS Word for the sake of
pagination? Thanks in advance for your help.
