Another reason I assumed that those were probably not footnotes is because in all the books that I can recall in which I've seen them, they usually start renumbering them when a new page starts. For example, they will number the first footnote as 1, then 2, then on the next page they start over with 1 again. That is, unless there is only one footnote; in which case I have usually seen a star. So it seems like an unconventional way of doing footnotes to keep adding on to the number instead of starting over with each new page.. Evan
