Arness was born James Aurness in _Minneapolis_
(mip://07ed4410/wiki/Minneapolis) ;_[4]_
(mip://07ed4410/default.html#cite_note-Tel_obit-3) he would
drop the "u" later. His parents were Rolf Cirkler Aurness (July 22, 1894 –
July 1982), a businessman, and Ruth (née Duesler) Aurness (died September
1986), a _journalist_ (mip://07ed4410/wiki/Journalist) . His father's ancestry
 was _Norwegian_ (mip://07ed4410/wiki/Norwegian_people) , his mother's
_German_ (mip://07ed4410/wiki/Germans) ._[5]_
(mip://07ed4410/default.html#cite_note-genes-4) The family name had been
Aursnes, but when Rolf's father
Peter Aursnes emigrated from Norway in 1887, he changed it to Aurness._[6]_
(mip://07ed4410/default.html#cite_note-bio-5) Arness and his family were _Me
thodists_ (mip://07ed4410/wiki/Methodist) ._[7]_
(mip://07ed4410/default.html#cite_note-6) Arness' younger brother was actor
_Peter Graves_
(mip://07ed4410/wiki/Peter_Graves) (1926-2010). Peter used the stage name
"Graves",
a maternal family name._[6]_ (mip://07ed4410/default.html#cite_note-bio-5)
Arness attended John Burroughs Grade School, _Washburn High School_
(mip://07ed4410/wiki/Washburn_High_School) and West High School in
Minneapolis.
During this time, Arness worked as a courier for a jewelry wholesaler,
loading and unloading railway boxcars at the James J. Hill's _Burlington_
