Hi Dan,

A hand held spectroscope would work fine. These can be purchased for under $2.
They can easily show mercury lines or sodium.

Subject: [AZ-Observing] need someone to ID a light

Fellow Stargazers: I've been in communication with a person in Buckeye
who is trying to remedy a light pollution issue in her neighborhood.
There's a huge bank of lights that are left on dusk-to-dawn every night
around a park area. From the photos she sent, I can see what appears to
be 25 individual lamps of at least 200 watts each. Problem is, it's hard
to tell from the photos whether they are mercury vapor (now illegal in
AZ) or metal halide. They are definitely not HPS or LPS. Whatever they
are, they are not properly shielded. I'm pretty sure anyone on this
forum would know a mercury vapor if they saw one, and that ID would help
tremendously in getting this situation fixed. I live way up in New
River, so that's a long drive for me. But if anyone reading this lives
close enough to the Buckeye area and would be willing to ID those
lights, please let me know and I'll put you in contact with the person.
She's already tried the usual channels, like Planning and Zoning, but is
not getting any cooperation. Many thanks.
