As Thad and Tom pointed, the best course of action is to contact the Border Patrol and Sheriff's Office, explain our purpose, and provide them a list of observing dates. In return, those agencies should provide us with contact information if we observe suspicious activity and how to deal with confrontations should that occur. I'm sure they would appreciate an extra set of eyes monitoring traffic. Second, an alternate location east or west from Vekol Road, but south of the I-8 is a safer prospect to avoid potential confrontations; however that will not stop the pull-overs, as these agencies have a job to serve. Many astronomers at Vekol are setting up deeper into the desert from the road. This is not a bad idea and may be a solution. Regarding confrontations with either illegal immigrants or drug traffickers, our strength comes from our numbers. No one should be left alone. Like Stan, I and many others have no fear of camping out alone, however times have changed and one of the last things we should like to hear is a news report for a missing amateur astronomer. We participate in a safe and friendly hobby--minus stepping on rattlesnakes and walking into bushes--there should be no reason why everyone cannot enjoy the night sky, and together we can do that... and have been doing just that. -FRANK -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
