A number of us, including myself, use equatorial platforms. I can hold on an object at 998x for at least 10-15 minutes without having to make a minor adjustment. Although my platform was a bit pricey, I still consider it the best investment for my Dob, followed by the 5x Powermate. Tom Osypowski manufactured mine, but there are a few others cheaper.
