I thought Steve was making the point that IT was displacing people
without providing sufficient new employment options when he said:

> Do the sum of these people add up to or supplement
> the displaced? No. Not even close.
When Unisys was formed by the merge of Burroughs and Sperry the new
firm had about 110,000 employees. About eight years later they had
22,000 employees. Some would have joined IT departments, but not enough
to balance the displaced employees. So where did they go? Not even the
mobile phone industry could have swallowed up all the displaced
employees from all the IT-affected industries.

But this has been happening for centuries. Makers of arrow heads were
displaced as the firearms industry grew. The automotive industry
displaced farriers, buggy whip makers, and saddlers. The electric light
industry displaced a lot of candlemakers. More recently, cheap labour
in China displaced thousands of workers in Australian textile, clothing
and footwear industries. Where did they all go?

So what will you do when documents don't need authors?

Allan
