A lossless one. Snagit offers (from memory) bmp and gif, maybe png. Any will
do, but not jpeg. Anyway, the problem isn't here because you say that when
you print direct from Word the images are OK.

into Word (I am not going to use full sized images), so that Distiller likes
them?

See previous discussion about dpi. Here though, Acrobat is, as it were,
acting as a proxy for your printer, so whatever the printer's dpi is, that's
the dpi for Acrobat. If you're going to resize, and you're having these
problems do it once only. That will be at the point where the image goes
from Word to your printer (=Acrobat).

display?

You've turned off compression. That's overkill; all you really need to do is
make sure you're using lossless compression. Acro 6 offers Zip compression,
and I'd guess 7 does too.

But apparently it's still not working.

Have you turned off downsampling?

And are you using File > Print or are you using the toolbar buttons? I have
a suspicion these buttons sometimes don't pick up all the options.

Also, this may be a dumb question, and it is a bit of a long shot, but have
you printed your PDF, on an actual piece of paper, or are you just looking
on the screen? Sometimes the one can be perfectly OK and the other not.

Pick an image that's going wrong. Exactly how big is it? In px and required
printed size?
