Frankly, for a first gig, take what you can get as long as it is not a long
contract. There are always those contracts floating around that they can't find
any takers for because the rate is so low. There have been a few here in
Brisbane for $35.00 that are advertised for months, disappear for a few weeks
and then re-appear (presumably the person who took them went on to take a
better offer.) Usually they are government or military, which is pretty useful
on your CV.

After that, don't get out of bed for less that $45.00.
