Everything worked? Word 6.0 was pretty capable (and was it the last
version with a comprehensive printed manual?) but that's when the
Master Document feature was introduced...

Just when I was about to suggest that the only way to avoid character
styles is to roll back to Word 6.0, which is the ONLY version of Word
in which EVERYTHING worked.
