But this is silly. It defeats the whole purpose of not having empty paras in a document in the first place. I'm glad to know why I've had that problem from time to time, but it's ridiculous that we have to do workarounds in this way. Yes, I know that I've just made a pointless howl of frustration, but really, what's the point in having to do everything in such a manual way. Might as well be using TextPad. And while I'm on the subject, and it's Friday, if swearing and a bad attitude doesn't bother you...=20 http://www.robohack.planix.com/~woods/ms-word.sucks.html -----Original Message----- From: Jon Glasson [mailto:jon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Friday, 8 August 2003 10:01 AM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [austechwriter] Re: Can anyone help with some numbers? Janet - the blank para's don't achieve anything in and of themselves. They just make it more likely that when you (or another writer) go to add text after a heading you will start in one of the blank para's rather than putting the insertion point at the end of the heading and hitting return. As Melanie describes, the problem occurs because of the hidden bookmarks Word inserts around the heading when you first cross-ref it. Therefore, you need to get into the habit of putting the blank para's in before you cross-ref to the heading (and as you never know which headings these will be, just put blanks after every one you create). It helps if you use heading styles that define the next para as body text, so you don't end up with blank heading paras. jon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet Taylor" <jtaylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, August 08, 2003 9:37 AM Subject: [austechwriter] Re: Can anyone help with some numbers? > Jon, > Do you mean that we should leave some blank paragraphs after each heading? > Melanie, > Unfortunately, the document isn't mine and the problem is worse when we > cross reference to bookmarks because: > - some of the authors don't realise that there is a bookmark and include the > heading in that, or > - the bookmark is not put over any text, so there is no text to pull into > the launch site.
