Hi Ron
When using Audacity, you have two ways of adjusting levels. One is in Audacity
itself. The second is by going to the Windows sound settings. Let's deal with
Audacity first.
From the tracks panel, press control+shift+f6 to get to a lot of toolbars.
Repeated tabbing will bring you to both recording and playback levels. These
can be adjusted with up/down arrows or, for larger jumps, with pageup/down
keys. These controls adjust the recording and playback levels of the sound
card Audacity is set to use.
For a more detailed look at and adjustment of settings, go to the Windows sound
settings. There are several ways of getting there, but I find the following
the most reliable.
Press Windows+r to open the Windows Run dialog. Enter mmsys.cpl and press
Enter. This will land you on the Playback tab. To get to the Recording (and
others) tab press shift+tab and then use arrow keys.
By arrowing down to a specific sound device and tabbing to Properties, a whole
world of adjustments open up. With some familiarisation, this is a quite
friendly environment for a screen reader user.
Late last year I did an audio tutorial on setting levels in Audacity. If
