Got it!!!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Interesting little observation, though:  On my system, the wording for the
monitor is "input monitor", the only one that wasn't checked.  There was no
line-in mentioned.  So then, when I got back to the Volume dialog, there was
in fact another mute button added that was checked by default, but JAWS
didn't tell me it was for the input monitor mute so I took a chance and
unchecked it, and voila, sound from my audio device.

I know what I'm going to be doing the rest of this weekend <grin>

Open the volume control.
Open the menus with al and down arrow to properties.  Press enter.
Tab until you get to a list of items.  Any item that you want displayed
needs to be checked.  Look for line-in in the list.  If it isn't checked,
check it with the space bar.  Then tab to and activate the ok button.  Now
you are back in the volume control main window.  Look for line-in and
uncheck the mute checkbox.
