Ok. FWIW, it's my understanding that my printer's black isn't quite as dark
as most dye based inkjets. (my printer is an Epson 2200, which uses the
Epson Ultrachrome pigment-based inks).

No, I don't think so, I think it is pretty similar. I get the impression
that this behaviour is not typical, and may be a result of the particular
device characteristic, but haven't run any tests to confirm this impression.
