        spotread returns:

                White Y = 179.1
                50%   Y = 89.05
                Black Y = 1.69

        so the expected 50% value would be (179.1 + 1.69)/2 = 90.4,
        which is reasonably close.

You'll need to try and figure out why it isn't working
on your machine. I note that the display visibly brightens when
the calibration is installed. Do you see that too ?
