FOOD FOR THOUGHT Your needles broke because they ran into something..... If not the needle plate then what did they whack? The fraying could be caused by the hook being scratched (been there) when the needle broke. Get a magnifying glass and find where the impact was. A couple of things to try...more backing, as nylon is very light, and sew slow....and depending on the type of thread breaks (clean breaks or shredding breaks), check needle alignment, and add or subtract MT.
