Most chat apps work as you say. Another way is to interleave yours and
theirs text in the same window conversationally, with your input
always typed at the end of the window.

There are plenty of free chat rooms, not the least of which is Google
Hangouts. Commercial ones include slack.com.

I work remotely as a software developer as part of a fully distributed
team. We live on chat to such an extent that email is hardly ever
used.

So they would be difficult to use in Braille.
Would one need to be a very fast typist to keep up.
Would it be confusing reading.

Chat room interactions are real time. Your message is displayed to
others in the chat room as soon as you hit enter, and vice versa.
