Hi Julie.

You can get a 2TB hard drive for around 85 quid, makes include Samsung, Hitachi and Western Digital not to mention Seagate and as Mo mentioned, you can get them in various configurations depending on what you want to spend. Mo has produced some excellent instructions on how to install the hard drive yourself and as it is such a simple process with a nominal amount of help needed, it might be worth going down this route.

All the best and good luck, Ibrahim.

Hi

How much would you charge to replace the hard drive on my machine and put
the necessary voice files on it. Would be willing to pay for up to a two
terabyte drive.

Many thanks
Julie.

Hi Yusuf.

Yep no problem. I'll be in touch shortly. I am also willing to replace drives for people, which is probably faster than returning to RNiB i am unsure what their turn around time would be, or if they even replace the drives... As for drive limitations, up to 2TB should work in theory but i'll have to double check and post back to list. it depends on limitations of the ext3 linux file system used on the disk.

Mo, Could you replace the hard drive with any of your choice? If you wanted say to put in a 1 TB disk or are there limitations. I'd be interested in those instructions as well. I can't see why the instructions shouldn't be posted here, I'm not the mod though so could you send them to me off list as well please?
Cheers
Yusuf

Hi Ibrahim,

I probably shouldn't post these instructions to list as it will probably
void your warranty. I will wait for clarification, though the RNIB
probably say you should send back to them anyway. its relatively simple
though it requires the use of partitioning software in part and a little
sighted help to reinstall the voice. I'll contact you off list, if the
mods are happy for me to post disassembly instructions here then i will do.

Hi Mo.

Could you tell us how to replace the hard drives in these TVonics
boxes? I think mine is going back to the RNIB as I'm experiencing
regular lock ups and freezes.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hello Carol.

This is probably due to a failing hard drive. The hard drives used in
these machines were cheap hitachi drives, i've already had one behaving
strangely. My box wouldn't offer me the option to format or to record. I
have replaced the hard drive in the unit with a better drive made by
seagate, formatted it and have had no further problems, no crashes, etc.
Because the voice runs from the hard drive, if there are any errors on
the drive or if its failing, it can cause you to experience
crashes/freezing. I can replace the drive for you if you wish, please
contact me off list and we can go from there. I'd recommend it to be
honest, because if you do a lot of recording and the drive fails it
would've been pointless you recording all those tv shows to watch later!

all the best,

Mo.

Hi all,

We have a fairly regular saying at home which is "Amy's on strike".
This simply means that she fails to speak, often after booting up,
when we first go to use her. Of course, we find ways round, sometimes
needing to reboot the box again; but I wonder if anyone else is
finding this problem and if you have a better solution than a bit of
hit and miss and, finally, if you've concluded what's going on and why!
