My concern is not the actual price of cartridges, rather I am interested to
hear from those using wi-fi printers and how they are getting on with them. You
do not indicate if yours is wi-fi. You are quite right I only want it to print
and do not want a scanner and photocopier in the same unit.

Hi.

I don't know much about the open university's assessment criteria, but I use
a Canon Picsma inkjet printer and buy my cartridges from
www.inkredible.co.uk. Having said that, I use my printer only for
occasional printing when I need to have a hardcopy of a document, but it
might be worth checking www.inkredible.co.uk to see how much their
cartridges for your potentially new printer will cost you. If your going to
do a lot of printing however, a mono or colour laser printer might be a
better investment even though the initial purchase price is somewhat higher
and the cost to replace the toner cartridge can be in the region of 30 to 60
quid. In my view I wouldn't spend the time of day looking at multifunction
units because the setup can be complicated and the front control panel is
pretty much inaccessible to blind users, meaning that things like PC free
copying and all the other features that make an all in one a convenience are
unusable without sighted assistance. For myself, I have the canon printer
which I mentioned above, plus a Canon flatbed scanner which with the
installed software on my machine work in harmony for copying should I need
to photocopy documents, and the best of it is that the flatbed is USB
powered, meaning I can carry it too and fro which I plan to do when starting
college in September.

All the best and I hope this has been of some use to you.

I asked the Open University Needs Assessment for a wi-fi printer and the
response I got was that this type of printer is not suitable for a blind
person. I an therefore being recommended a Cannon printer which I have been
told cost 49 pounds! I am expecting that when I first replace the blac and
colour cartridge both will in total cost more than the printer. I had a
Lexmark wi-fi printer which I found excellent until my guide dog knocked it
off the low table I had it on. Since then the wi-fi does not work so I have
had to go back to using a cable with it' interesting though that I cannot
use my disabled Student Allowance for wi-fi printer because someone has
decided that such a printer is not suitable for blind people.

Yup - safest bet is Maplins which we always recommend for Braille
embossers. £24.99.

Can only say that I've not had good experience with the Lexmark we
bought. It needed to be almost on top of the wireless router.

George.

Subject: [access-uk] PARALLEL TO USB CONVERTER?

Hi all,

Well, My old desktop has, at least for the moment, given up working
and I need to use my parallel printer. My laptop only has a USB
option so, can I get a converter at a reasonable price? If so, any
details would be most welcome.

In addition, if I need to go for a new printer, as I have WiFi in the
house, should I consider a WiFi or USB connection printer? It would
be good to have details, please, of any models which you really like
and are fully useable for a totally blind person.

Thanks.
