Hi John,

Should this be a dash and the pound sign? so that when jaws comes across it it says minus and pound?

Jim

Hi Jim, open notepad or word. Type a pound sign. Then highlight it and press shift and right arrow to select it, then control c to copy. Open the jaws dictionary manager, click on add, and in the actual word field paste the pound sign. On the replacement word field put what you want it called. Then tab to ok and click it, then control s to save.
                    John.

Hi Ian,

I'm a Lloyeds bank user, but could you tell me how to add the -£ sign to the jaws dictionary, I've never added things to the dictionary before. using jaws 9. Thanks.

Damon et Al,

JAWS will announce the dash as a minus if it is followed by either a number or a dollar symbol, even if punctuation is turned off. It doesn’t announce the dash as a minus when it is followed by a pound symbol.

The trick is to add an entry to the dictionary with a dash followed by a pound symbol being announced as “minus pounds”.

Regards.

Ian

I am not sure how accurate this is. If I go into Notepad and type -3 (a3
immediately preceded by a dash), JAWS 11 reads this as minus 3. Indeed,
in typing this message, the same thing happens. If there is a space
between the dash and the number, it is read as - 3. I find it hard to
believe that this behaviour would not be replicated on an online page.
Does the Lloyds page actually have a dash immediately preceding a
number? If there is a space, would Window-Eyes or any other screenreader
handle the situation differently?

Hi Damon,

Thank you for your message. Like yourself, I am a Lloyds customer,
(and sometimes use online banking), so I will certainly be making
Lloyds bank aware of the confusion they are causing to Jaws users.

However, in view of Steve Nutt's comment that the Lloyds bank change
in layout does not cause problems for window-eyes users, I will also
be contacting my Jaws supplier's support team to make them aware that
Jaws is unable to correctly interpret the - as a minus sign when it
precedes figures in a balance when displayed online.
