Thanks Chris. With regard to your first suggestion, there is no mention of such 
a button in 
the manual though.  

I had a look for something of the type you suggest  in Control Panel yesterday 
but with no 
luck.  Perhaps part of the trouble is my unfamiliarity with the Vista Control 
Panel and its 
enormous number of applets  Still I will have another look today.  

Of course I could resort to sticking a piece of cardboard over the buttons, but 
I am sure that 
it should be possible to disable them anyway.   I still cannot understand why 
FN + f9 does 
not work on this machine.
