Hi Andy, The number of wireless connections you want to make is unlikely to cause any issues, unless of course you want your entire neighbourhood linked in! (Smile) One RJ45 would technically be enough for a small system. The only question might arise if you had a printer you wished to share where there are four possible ways to connect. 1) Direct to one of your PCs, in which case that PC would need to be switched on when you wanted to print from another system. 2) A network printer - which could be connected to the router via an RJ45. 3) A wireless printer - becoming more common these days. 4) Some routers have a USB printer port, but these can be a pain to configure. An Ethernet cable does indeed have an RJ45 on each end, but these cable do come in 2 flavours. 1) What is called "Straight Through" or "Patch" cable. These are the most common. 2) A "Crossover" cable - usually only used when connecting two PC directly together and not via a router. I can't say for 100% certainty, but the Wireless Broadband routers I have had dealings with have generally come with an RJ45 straight through cable, and a router to phone point cable and filter. Of course one or both may not be long enough, but longer cables are easy enough to obtain these days. You advised getting a router with at least one RJ45, does it matter how many devices I want to connect wirelessly? Will one RJ45 be enough for setting up purposes? You said that a router will come with a cable to go to the phone filter, so will I need to buy a separate ethernet cable to go from the PC to the router? Also, does an ethernet cable have an rj45 plug on each end? Thanks - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Bell" <george@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 10:44 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | Hi Andy, | | Routers do vary, but if you get a wireless, broadband | router, make sure it does have at least one RJ45 port. | | The router should come with a cable to connect to something | called a "Filter". The filter is an adaptor which allows | you to connect both telephone and Router to the telephone | line. It separates the voice and data. You will need one | of these filters an any telephone point with a phone | connected to it, otherwise telephone voice reception will be | decided nasty. | | Your desk top can then be wired to the from PC to Router. | | Once you have the router set up and the system connecting to | the Internet, you can then tackle the wireless side of | things. | | George. | | -----Original Message----- | From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andy Collins | Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 10:27 PM | To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | | Hi Edward - | | Yes, you are right, I do want my laptop on the wireless | network, but I have | a PC too, would that stay hard wired via the ethernet cable | to the router? | | Can I just check for understanding regarding what actual | sockets/ports come | on the router please? | | I'm guessing there must be a USB connection from the phone | line, plus an | ethernet socket out to the computer, is there anything else? | | Thanks again - | | Andy | ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Edward Green" <edward@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> | To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> | Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 9:59 PM | Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | | || Hi Andy, || || The switch I mentioned is on the front of your laptop to | the left of the || headphone and microphone sockets, assuming you're meaning | to set up the || network with your new Pavilion. || || I can't remember whether you need to attach the router to | the phoneline || beforehand, can't see that it would hurt though.
