Thanks for that tip Colin. I've already had trouble buying a particular
item this week from a WEB site I didn't know. The item appeared much
cheaper than anywhere else but then the price kept going up as I got to
the checkout, then I saw the postage . . . and didn't go through with
it. I'd wasted a lot of time though and was pretty annoyed. I hope the
same doesn't hold true when I try to buy new through EBAY . . ..

Carol,
I'd recommend that for your first transaction you go ahead and purchase
something with a very nominal value. Less than a fiver or so, work on
the following, if you can ill afford to lose the money, don't do it! E
Bay and Paypal are conceptually brilliant, unfortunately it compares
very much with buying stuff from a stranger in a pub, so obviously it
has similar risks.
There are a number of multi party actions pending against both E Bay and
Paypal for the way that they allow unscrupulous activity to go on
unchecked.
Another issue is the postage rates charged. You may indeed bid and get a
bargain for pennies, but then the seller loads the postage, and makes a
wacking profit that way. It's best to check the postage rates before you
enter the auction.
OH! and finally, not only is there plenty of hooky stuff out there, but
there's a load of crap too, the old adage "buyer beware" has never been
so true than with E Bay!
