Carol,

I'd recommend that for your first transaction you go ahead and purchase
something with a very nominal value. Less than a fiver or so, work on the
following, if you can ill afford to lose the money, don't do it! E Bay and
Paypal are conceptually brilliant, unfortunately it compares very much with
buying stuff from a stranger in a pub, so obviously it has similar risks.

There are a number of multi party actions pending against both E Bay and
Paypal for the way that they allow unscrupulous activity to go on unchecked.

Another issue is the postage rates charged. You may indeed bid and get a
bargain for pennies, but then the seller loads the postage, and makes a
wacking profit that way. It's best to check the postage rates before you
enter the auction.

OH! and finally, not only is there plenty of hooky stuff out there, but
there's a load of crap too, the old adage "buyer beware" has never been so
true than with E Bay!

Colin F.
