Actually stickz that nearest a/c which I circled in my jpg sometimes
disappears or fades as I move my head around a little, presumably to do
with Trackir causing the screen to be re-drawn as I move. Similarly
online I can sometimes see slightly more distant a/c blinking in and out
as I move my head although in the test mission I never see the next
nearest a/c (4km) unless I zoom in.
I live 2 miles (3km) from Shoreham airport. During airshows I can see
the aircraft without difficulty from my house although it's not always
possible to tell what they are in side view but sometimes I can tell
it's a Mustang or Spit from the outline and lighting and something like
a Harrier is easy to pick out. Plan views are easier to identify.
However, what I see is constant and doesn't flicker and some days they
are easier to see, depending on lighting angles. I have the impression
that in IL-2 the scaling of aircraft with distance is perhaps not
correct. Or perhaps my zoom distance isn't realistic and I need to zoom
in more to a life-size FOV. Unfortunately that makes the overall game
more difficult to manage with only one screen ( I can't run 3 screens in
one panoramic view as in DCS because the side stretching is horrendous).
So, the first two attachments are a couple of views of what it's
actually like to sit in a Spitfire cockpit and what you see (taken in
our replica spit but the cockpit framing is accurate).
I decided to use that 'realistic' view and go back to square one, so,
take a deep breath...........
I reset my monitor (AOC e2752EQ) then made brightness (70%), contrast
(70%) and Gamma (Gamma2) adjustments recommended by a couple of
websites. of course your monitors will be different (I had previously
adjusted them to give a richer less washed out desktop). I used Cina's
NVidia settings and the Reshade utility in-game with his settings. I set
my in-game graphics settings as attached. The main difference between
mine and Cina's is that I have HDR and Sharpen on (no technical reason
why, that's just where I ended up). I set my Mission settings as
attached. I used a revised version of the mission to give a set of a/c
at 9 0'clock through 10 o'clock and another at 12:30 o'clock through 1
o'clock to give different angles-off. Visibility Mission attached. The
results were as attached and a very slight improvement off-line. (I did
try with the enhanced distance visibilty and it was a huge gain). I
haven't tried it online yet. The arrows indicate where the dots are and
their distance in km, you have to look up from the arrows. (btw I lost
nothing converting the screenshots to jpgs.)
Note! The CurrentZoom image is how I set my zoom up thinking I might
get better results than zoomed out more. CurrentZoomLeft has some
aircraft turning particularly 3, 5, 8 and 10 (I don't know why) but they
are hard to see. In CurrentViewOneClock perhaps some are turning but the
narrow 'angle off' not only shows how much harder it is to see aircraft
at those angles. The main thing is in both views they are very slightly
improved. Finally, CurrentZoomLeftEnh and CurrentViewOneClockEnh show
the gain if the enhanced distance setting is used. What a pity they
can't implement something in between.
So, not much further forward but onward and upward.
Thanks to all for your comments.

Klem is doing better than me, ran it 8 times, quickest seen one is about 30secs in, twice seen nothing at all. Once saw 3 but as it told me I was leaving battle area about 30secs later I assume this was because the second two started to turn a big circle in front. My guess is, I pick them up about 1.5 to 2 km. Whilst his static picture make things worse to view due to compression of the original picture, those I could pick out were so incredibly faint that even moving, my eyes are not going to see it. Shall have to change them to P38 and a20 and see difference.
Should be in Scotland, first time for a week the grass has thawed out.

Cina/Guys,
I have set my graphics to exactly what Cina uses. It doesn't seem to
help at all. I used the attached mission in which there are
Spitfires
from 3km to 10km at 1km intervals in front ranging from 10
o'clock (3km)
through to 1 o'clock (10km). I start the mission and leave it on
autopilot. I look around immediately and the only one I can see
is 3km
away at about 9:30 o'clock. It is a very small dot just a few pixels
(I've attached a jpg of it). If I zoom in I can just see the one at
about 10:30, 4km away. btw Speed should be 200mph.
In the attached screenshot I have circled the 3km a/c. Cina I'd be
grateful if you could run the mission and send me a screenshot of
what
you see, especially in the 9 through 12 o'clock view.
Thanks guys,
klem
