I agree that the dog situation at the Wetlands is bad. I was there
yesterday and a woman was "walking" four dogs that were all tearing through
the woods and making lots of noise. The place has become a dog park. I
have had dogs paw at my pants with dirty paws, run into me, etc. I've kind
of had it with the out of control situation there.

Grace,

Glad the owlet survived. Yesterday Jan called me and was trying to fend off
the dogs that were running loose in the park. Maybe there is some way that
could be prevented. All the dog walkers seem to think it's the one place
they can let them run loose.
I'm sure the Richmond police have other things to do, but meanwhile wildlife
has to suffer, as well as birders. We were at the Wetlands the other day and
had at least 10 dogs come up to us, jump all over us, etc. Maybe a letter to
the editor of the TD?

The listserve won't allow any attachments, so they don't show up on your
post. If you have any good photos of the owlet(s) please send it to me
directly. I may be able to use one next month.

The barred owlets in the Wetlands have fledged, and today one owlet
appeared to have fallen almost into the creek near the bridge. It
couldn't fly and couldn't scramble up the steep overhanging bank (kept
slipping down towards the water) but finally it reach a horizontal twig
to perch upon. The parent was watching the whole time I was there
(from about 5:15pm for 1.5 hrs), initially swooping in with a meal in
it's beak (a baby bird), observing from various perches. Bob Winn sent
Ralph over to see if a rescue was in order-he thought not. I'm not so
sure. A few pictures are attached. Grace Suttle
