i see your point but i think some people do it for high availability. for
example they would have 2 partitions on the server, the first being the
local disks with the OS, and then have all their apps installed on the 2nd
partition being on the san. then they can snap and/or clone that 2nd
partition all they want on the SAN to make it easier to recover and to
image.
i don't do it, but i think some people might for these reasons...

Right. Although, if you aren't BOOTING from SAN, then you must be using
local disk for your OS, swap, etc. In that case, what are you using the SAN
disks for? Unless you have truly GIGANTIC application suites, I don't see
why non-booting-SAN for Citrix would make sense.

right but my point is that he was saying that "booting from san" would
cost you more than just using the san for other disks which I don't agree
with. you would need the adaptors either way...
the concept of booting from san doesn't cost you anything as compared to
normal use of the san on a server.

You still need 2 adapters (for redundancy) per server, plus SAN
ports, usually there is management software associated with the SAN which is
licensed per connection, etc.... This person is problem referring to all of
the overall costs that add about $5k or more each time you hook a device
up.

well you really don't need more disk to boot from SAN than you would if
you were just using the SAN for regular storage. especially for citrix, you
don't need alot of disk for citrix boxes...

my understanding is that it was disk cost - the # of spindles needing to
be allocated, multiplied by the number of servers booting from SAN.....
