[THIN] Re: OT - Library Computer for Internet Access Only

I try to stay as far away as possible from any product made by Wyse. We =
thought about a hefty thin client to do this but I was able to build =
each box for just under $350 (including Win XP Pro) which is about half =
of what the thin client would have run us.

Embedded, it provides enhanced support for wireless connectivity, =
greater
security, and manageability. The flexible model 9235LE offers a built-in
Internet browser for local multimedia and support for over 9000 =
peripherals

the
list price is $650

Sorry for the off topic post but I need some opinions on this.

My company runs retirement centers for the elderly. At each location we =
=3D
have a library with a DSL connection. I have been tasked with building =
=3D a
stripped down pc for them to use to surf the net and use web based =3D =
email.

I have built a couple of AMD based machines with no cd, no floppy, =3D =
minimal
everything. The trick now is what operating system to use and =3D how =
to lock
it all down.

I like Windows XP because the version of IE that ships with it is =3D =
colorful
and easy to read. I am also open to Win98 or Linux or whatever =3D will
accomplish this best. All they ever need to see is the web =3D =
browser.=3D20

I want to make sure they see no desktop, no drives, etc and that they =
=3D are
not able to install crap like the bonzi buddy or gator if they go to =3D =
a
website that asks them to install it. I also have to make sure that =3D =
their
13 year old grandson is not able to screw it up when he comes for =3D a =
visit.
I don't want history or cookies saved and I don't want it to =3D =
remember any
of the last visited sites or any of that autocomplete =3D garbage. =
These
computers will be shared by about 500 senior citizens =3D who have an =
uncanny
ability to break things (not as bad as nurses, but =3D close).

Does anyone have any experience with setting something like this up or =
=3D
have any ideas how to go about it.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Greg
