This is a long standing debate between Joe and I . To me VDI, and most
hypervisor virtualizations for that matter, are just not efficient enough. For
applications that require remoting and certain kinds of processing I am sure
there is a good match, i.e. stock traders, CAD engineers working at a distance,
etc.
The case we are pondering more and more is where remoting is needed but the
requirements to get the application set working in TS are highly complicated.
These may not be highly specialized apps, but apps that just don't play well in
TS. We have made some incredibly difficult apps work together on TS, but in the
end you have a very complicated system that is hard to upgrade and change. So
for certain organizations that have the skills to manage a PC but not a complex
TS environment, VDI starts to become attractive.
One of our Bri-Forum sessions is called "Y-VDI" in which we will outline all
the use cases we can think of that support VDI.
My main issues with VDI are lack of efficiency, i.e. a really big ass server
might support 15-20 users, that completely sucks!!
This is going to be an interesting one to watch and get involved it to see
where it really works and where it falls flat on it's face!!

I 100% agree. VDI is a joke, I think or at least it is today. Yes, there are
some really good use cases, although don't ask me for any ;). But there are...
That being said in most cases you still have a fat PC so why have a desktop
on desktop. Is that not what we liked about MetaFrame, that we don't need a
desktop on desktop?
With PVS you don't have to deal with that... It works perfect... Perfect and
it is local and secure.. anyhoo...
I think VDI will be much better in a year once the broker venders get the bugs
worked out and can give us a native experience through a remote session and we
can get rid of our local machine for thin clients but then you have a cultural
issue.
But, if people want to use it I will learn it...
Again, this is why I like Provisioning Server. It is an amazing product and
I'm blown away Citrix downplays it. XenDesktop sucks compared to PVS. It
walks all over XenDesktop, in my view and I'm not saying XenDesktop is bad but
I just don't need another desktop right now...
But PVS... Now think about deploying ESX, XenSource, or Hyper-V through it and
then deploying OSes through it and then desktops... You can do everything in
seconds and DR is a snap.. WOW.. It is an amazing solution, period! IMHO
