Jim this is not possible. Having worked with the MS reps at a VERY large MS client with an unbelievable license contract on these vary issues there is only one way around it. And that is a private piece of Microsoft code that allows unlimited licenses. But outside of the largest customers in the world you have to have a license server.=20 Ron Oglesby Senior Technical Architect =20 RapidApp Office 312.372.7188 Mobile 815.325.7618 email roglesby@xxxxxxxxxxxx =20 -----Original Message----- From: Jim Hathaway [mailto:JimH@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 5:40 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Confused about TS License server Yes, very recently actually.=3D20 Some of our folks recently upgraded a client's domain model from NT 4.0 to Win2k. Once that was done, the existing win2k TS servers (which were all staticly set in the registry to point to a specific Win2k member server hosting the TS license service) all started within a few hours of the migration to not accept incoming connections from any device, even WinXP pro / Win2k pro stations.=3D20 The fix for this, was of course installing the TS license service (re-authorizing it of course) to one of the new Win2k AD DC's, updating the registry entry on all servers to point to the new TS license server, and rebooting the TS servers.=3D20 If you're thinking it's possible to 'fake out' the service during install to put it on something other than a DC within a Win2k domain, you may be right. But I'm not sure I see the need as it's a service that uses hardly any resources when running.=3D20 J -----Original Message----- From: Adam.Baum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:Adam.Baum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=3D20 Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 3:11 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Confused about TS License server Ah..Now I see what you were talking about. I thought you were referring to the type of server, not domain. Have you actually confirmed this? Like I said, I got an error msg a few weeks back telling me that it could only be installed on DCs or servers in a workgroup, but the resolution was to apply an IP address.. The same info also appears in MS' unattended install parameter doc. =3D20 "Jim Hathaway" <JimH@infogroupnw To: <thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> .com> cc: <thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: Subject: [THIN] Re: Confused about TS License server =3D20 thin-bounce@freel ists.org =3D20 =3D20 06/11/2003 03:03 PM Please respond to thin =3D20 =3D20 Adam,=3D3D20 Not so what? You're running an NT 4.0 domain w/ win2k TS servers that have the TS license service. Ok . . so? How is that different from my statement that within an NT 4.0 domain; "TS license service must be installed to any available win2k server. Can be the TS servers, or any other win2k server that's within the same domain." The limitation is that if your domain is win2k, the license service can only run on DC's. So when / if you upgrade your current NT 4.0 domain to win2k AD, you're going to have to move your TS license service to a DC. If you're not running a Win2k domain, as long as the TS license service is installed to a win2k server (as you've apparently done at your site). . you'll be fine. Sorry if my statement wasn't clear enough on this.=3D3D20 J -----Original Message----- From: Adam.Baum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:Adam.Baum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=3D3D20 Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 2:53 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Confused about TS License server Not so. I am running TS Licensing on all my W2K servers and none of them are domain controllers and all servers are in an NT4 domain. The TS License server came off of the W2K CD. My servers are at SP2 (some at SP3). I know MS makes this claim and in fact, I ran into an error msg the other day that said the same thing. My error turned out to be that I had no IP address. As soon as I gave it one, the problem went away. If the workstations are running W2K Pro, or higher, then they may be getting around the license issue that way since they come with a built in CALs. adam =3D3D20 "Jim Hathaway" <JimH@infogroupnw To: <thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> .com> cc: Sent by: Subject: [THIN] Re: Confused about TS License server =3D3D20 thin-bounce@freel ists.org =3D3D20 =3D3D20 06/11/2003 02:41 PM Please respond to thin =3D3D20 =3D3D20 What type of domain are they Win2k? or NT 4.0?
