Back-light is off to one side of the LCD. Usually a straight-tube shaped bulb the length of the LCD, halogen I think. Sometimes you can see (very faint) the LCD image when the light is out. If this bulb doesn't light then you will not beable to see anything. This may be the problem your experiencing, I've seen this a couple of times on laptop computers. Hope this helps. Were you able to monitor the PS when the unit was turning on and off? Was it the back-light that was turning on and off or was the entire unit shutting down? Not being able to turn the unit off once in a while may indicate a micro problem. These monitors aren't very servicable, all those VLSI chips inside and all, good luck.
