Seems a bit of an expensive novelty Phil. I frequantly commute by cycle wi= th my journey mixed on segregated cycle routes and carriageway. A countdown= timer wouldn't reduce my overall journey time to any degree, just the dura= tion of time waiting at a crossing which is easily made up passing the stan= ding traffic. I would rather see the money spent on maintaining cycle lane= s and cutting the vegitation back that threatens to whip me in the face whe= n I'm pushed closer to the kerb by passing traffic. A few seconds hanging around at the Toucan is often welcome! It's the only= chance I have to get my breath back..... It is apparently in use on the continent and gives an indication to cyclist= s so that they can adjust their speed so that they can reach the toucan whi= lst it is still on green. Anyone know anything about such a device? have a look at a company called = 'tradeinvent' http://www.tradeinvent.co.uk/products/bicycletraffic.php No rants please - We have already been through the 'how can it work with an= ything but a fixed time crossing' and 'should we be getting cyclists to spe= ed up as they approach a conflict point with both cars and peds' I recall there being a count-down timer being made available from one signa= l company that may have been used by some of you. We certainly didn't but = I suppose the concept is not hugely different - any comments on that one as= well.
