Isn't a leak down test where you fill the engine to the top of the carb with
oil and see if any leaks out???

burnt valve/worn seat area can cause combustion to escape into the exhaust
port. If it's running rich you could have flame travel as well at the
exhaust port causing a pop.
A leakdown test is easy enough to do.

I'm pretty sure it's not too lean. Wouldn't a burnt valve affect preformance?

There's a difference between pop and poop.
1) Too lean a mixture.
2) Burnt Exhaust Valve.
