Here's a link to one application where use of
beads seems to be beneficial:

Jim Williams shows the results of a bead at the
input to and output of a linear regulator used to
regulate down from a switching supply.

There are many applications where very quiet low
currents are needed for circuitry such as clock
fanouts or PLL circuits. In these cases the loads
themselves may have very low switching currents,
but require very low noise power.

A good example is the use of ECL clock fanout parts
running as PECL. The noise on VCC is directly
coupled to the output, unlike when the part is run
as ECL with VCC at ground.
