[SI-LIST] Re: 4-port node numbering

I love opinion questions since I rarely get them wrong :^)

Here is my $0.02:

DB/MA are very intuitive displays of the information. If my intent is
to take the information and plot it to draw some inference, this is the
way I go 99.9% of the time.

But, I adhere to the idea that dB/A and MA distributions (of passive
structures) are not normal. The magnitude data is truncated at 0dB
(|1|), and the phase information is tough to deal with when bounded by
+/-180degrees (or even if unwrapped).

Real/Imag distributions tend to be normal and numerically convenient to
work with. When my intent is to do a lot of statistical or numerical
post processing this is my format of choice. =20

Now if you asked me what is the current default format on my VNA? It is
R/I. On my favorite simulator? dB/A

Best regards,
-Brett

Now that we have an understanding about the lack of node numbering
sequence standards....

Anyone want to make any comments on which Touchstone data format (DB,
MA, RI) is more common and / or preferred?=3D20

Thanks to all who responded to my earlier question on 4-port node
numbering.
=3D20

After going over the many on list and off list responses it appears that
the opinion is split about 50-50 on which of the two numbering schemes
makes sense and should be used. There are persuasive arguments given for
each case.

=3D20

So it looks like there currently is not any global standard to follow
and that one must decide which makes sense from their own perspective
and then at least standardize the node definitions within ones own
company.

I have general question regarding 4-port s-parameter files. Does anyone
know if there is a generally accepted industry standard for node
numbering?
