HUH?? I didn't ask about OFA CHIC. i am well aware of it. I didn't ask about
the difference between the CHIC and the GSDCA Health Award of Merit, either,
did I??? My dog has the CHIC; OFA sent it to me without my even applying for,
requesting, nor paying for it. Harley earned it and OFA sent it to me. I am
asking about how a GSDCA member actually receives the
recognition/certificate(?) offered by the GSDCA for their Health Award of
Merit. Sorry if i didn't make my question clear enough for you! Paula, 303
days and counting Home of BIS, BISS, Multi-Group Winning, AKC JAM/AOE, Intern'l

Right now, HIPS/ELBOWS/TT. everything else is optional, and you do not have to
pass the test, only report the results to OFA, THAT was the MAJOR difference
between CHIC and the HEALTH MERIT AWARDGerman Shepherd Dog(search)

Hip DysplasiaOFA Evaluation
Elbow DysplasiaOFA Evaluation
Temperament TestResults of GSDCA Temperament test submitted to OFA
Congenital Cardiac Database (Optional)OFA Evaluation
Autoimmune thyroiditis (Optional)OFA evaluation from an approved laboratory -
recommend yearly testing
Eye Clearance (Optional)CERF evaluation - recommend annually until age 6, every
2 years thereafter
Degenerative Myelopathy (Optional)DNA Based Degenerative Myelopathy test
through UFL or the U of MO.

So, what kind of, and amount of, hoops must a GSDCA member have to jump through
to receive THIS recognition from the PC?? Or is there a charge for it as
there is for the Red Book?

From the 2010 Red Book ( A GREAT Christmas Present)
The German Shepherd Dog Club of America established the Health Award of
Merit to recognize those owners of dogs that have achieved a level of Health
Excellence in Testing for health problems that confront our breed. From
2005 to 2010 the Health Award of Merit was identical to the GSDCA requirements
for the Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC. CHIC is a
centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health
Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
Their mission is to provide a searchable source of health information for
owners, breeders, and scientists, that will assist in breeding healthy dogs.
Those dogs that have achieved that superior level of testing for health issues
are listed on this Health Award of Merit page.
GSDCA Specific Requirements:
* Hip Dysplasia through OFA evaluation
* Elbow Dysplasia through OFA evaluation
* Congenital Cardiac Database through OFA evaluation
* Autoimmune Thyroiditis through OFA evaluation from an approved
laboratory yearly
* Temperament Test – Results of GSDCA Temperament test submitted to OFA
* Eye Clearance ( Optional) – CERF evaluation each year until 6,
thereafter every 2 years
* Degenerative Myelopathy ( Optional) results submitted to OFA
