Hi everyone

I've been reading this thread with interest. Thought I might give my
thoughts on the 'issue'.

I started showing about 10 years ago, when I bought my 1st stud dog and
foundation bitch. The entries in the allbreeds ring for gsd's back then
were very low - 5 or 6 shepherds in total. And 'most' of them were not what
'I' would call the 'specialty' type - straight back, virtually no topline
slope. Those that had the topline slope would NEVER win. The gsd's also
NEVER won the group. We shepherd people would whinge and complain that the
shepherd was NEVER even looked at for the group.

One of my mentors told me back then that it was because there were never
enough gsd's for the judges to get to know what the breed should look like.
The 'specialty' people would scoff at the allbreeds shows for the same
reason.

Now ...... over the last 2 or 3 years, more of the 'specialty' type dogs
have been entered in the allbreeds ring - not sure why, but maybe because
there are more gsd's around that have 'that' topline, or maybe everyone has
worked out that they weren't winning because of the reasons my mentor
stated. Whatever the reason, in the last 2 years we have had bigger
shepherd entries, and we are now 'consistently' winning the Groups and the
In Show awards. I've spoken to a couple of (older) judges, and they've all
basically confirmed what my mentor told me, and said they have now realized
the quality of the shepherds, and are more aware of our standard. Also
learned that 'some' judges just do not like the 'slope' of the specialty
dogs - but that these judges are also becoming more aware of the 'workings'
of the breed.

We now have much higher entries in the allbreed ring, both 'with' and
'without' that sloping topline. Both types are winning ............... and
now we're hearing whingeing from the 'other' breeds that the 'bloody
shepherd' is always winning. <VBG>

My take on the whole thing is that there 'are' definitely 2 'types' gsd -
but they both follow the standard. The 'working' lines seem to be lacking
the topline 'slope', but they 'do' conform to the standard. I think we, as
breeders, have just accentuated that topline over the years.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] All breed and Specialty points are the same

We have spent a considerable amount of time arguing back and forth over all
breeds vs specialty. What a waste of time.

Fact: Any German Shepherd Dog without a disqualifying fault is eligible to
be in any show ring. And we see them.

Fact: There are lots of GSD registered every year.

Fact: We as a breed club have the most amount of specialties every year.

Fact: There is an all breed show happening every weekend within driving
distance, far more than specialties.

Fact: Most people showing dogs have to work for a living. Money IS a
factor.

Fact: When you get the CH certificate, the points are all the same,
regardless of ring.

Now, when you consider all those facts, it becomes obvious that all these
registered dogs have to be showing somewhere. So, you will find many
people
will show at all breeds because they are close, they are frequent, and they
want to. Many other will show at specialties because they believe this to
be
the best ring for their dog. You will hear only pretty non moving dogs are
seen at the all breeds. So, by default, only ugly moving dogs are at the
specialties?......Careful there.

Ideally any winning GSD can and does win at both rings. I have had those
dogs. And lots of listers have them also. Ask anyone about Mystique,
Scoop,
and Kellie records at the all breeds.

Our local breed club combined the spring specialty with an all breed club,
for a total of 3 shows in one weekend. We had a huge ring, and a specialty
judge. Ideal conditions. We thought so. Our entry was only 1 point on
each
side. What a waste.

Some judges like to do one breed only. Others like to branch out. I am one
of those. I like other breeds, find the working group and the hound group
very interesting. And have learned to appreciate our GSDs better because of
that. GSDs remain number one in my heart, and always will. But I believe
that
other breeds have their merits also, and I want to learn more about them.
This
doesn't make me better than those judges who prefer to do one breed only.
We
have a difference of opinion, but neither one of us is either right or
wrong. It just is.

So, stop banging your heads against the wall and buy and breed those
correct
dogs that can win at both ring.

Truth is until better dogs start coming at the all breed rings, specialists
will keep complaining about those "walkers" all breed dogs wining. So, if
your dogs are so good, take them to the all breeds. It is also truth that
the
all breeders will keep complaining about those ugly flying dogs at the
specialties. Then bring your beautiful dogs to the specialties.

Other than that, I feel this whole thread is a waste of energy.
