That still doesn't explain why he couldn't use a TLR and some sort of
Paramander scheme. Maybe Rollei wasn't giving him cameras.

I think moving the lens out for close ups would be the be the equivalent
of using a longer lens. Maybe it was this forced the poor man to use the
free Hassies.

Adams liked his ground glass and MF SLRs (Hassies provided by the factory). Hand holding does not produce sharp negatives and he generally steered clear... this is all discussed in his famous trilogy, where he demonstrates the perspective error created by the different viewing and taking lenses on a Hassy SW...
