I use a QR plate. One day when I moved the camera on the tripod, the
camera fell to the ground; the QR mechanism had not locked properly. I
was not 'happy' but the damage was fortunately only minor mechanical and
not optical. Now I always check.....

yes.  i'm in the habit of holding the lens while flipping the lever.
but i suppose some people aren't, especially VC newbies.  it's good
practice to always hang on to $500 or more of precious glass, yes.
