It couldn't have been a sign from the Pope - it was Easter Morning, but right after a Protestant service.

I would have to see it but its not unusual for lenses to produce ghost images of bright objects in the field of view or even somewhat outside of it. Lens coating reduces this substantially but its still possible for a reflection to be focused on the film and not at all unusual for it to be 180degrees from the object being imaged. Some lenses can image the iris. This was a popular effect in movies some years ago, simply a fault in zoom lenses. Not sure about the cross but it could be a distorted or aberrated flare spot.
